Troubleshooting ===================== Introduction: ------------- Welcome to the Nord Modular version 3.0! This version represents a big step for the Nord Modular system, since almost the entire software is completely rewritten and improved. ========================================================================= 1. Installation --------------- ******************************************************************************** * IMPORTANT! If you are upgrading from version 1.x or 2.x you must save all your * current patches from the Nord Modular internal memory to your hard disk before * downloading the new V3.03 OS into the synth! * * all old patches in the synth will be erased! ******************************************************************************** ----------------------------------------------- System requirements: PC: Intel Pentium 133MHz or better. Microsoft Windows 95, 98 or NT 4.0. Screen area: at least 800*600 (optimized for 1024*768 or more). Colors: 16 bit Windows compatible Midi interface. MAC: PowerPC processor. Mac OS 8.6 Screen area: at least 800*600 (optimized for 1024*768 or more). Colors: 16 bit (More than 32000 colors). Memory: at least 32 Mb. Opcode OMS 2.3 or later. Mac compatible Midi interface. ------------------------------------------------ PC: If an earlier version of Nord Modular (1.x or 2.x) is installed on the computer, the new version will coexist with the old one. This means that you could leave your V2.10 editor and use it for converting older patches to V2.10 (V3.0 doesn't accept patches from versions older than V2.10). After uninstalling the old version you have to reconnect the file extension .pch with the Nord Modular V3.0. This can be done either by reinstalling V3.0, or by manually making the connection in Windows. Make sure that you don't run both editors assigned to the same Midi ports as this will cause the V2.10 to malfunction. MAC: We recommend that you choose the "Run Midi in background" option in the OMS Midi Setup Dialog. ===================================================================================== 2. New features compared to V2.1: --------------------------------- Two patch sections: Two sections of the patch are now available: one where you place modules that should be used for each voice individually (Poly Voice Area), and one where you place modules that should be common for all voices in the patch (Common Voice Area). All voices from the Poly Voice Area can then be processed in the Common Voice Area. For example, in the Poly Voice Area you could place oscillators, filters and envelope generators. Patch the Poly Voice Area to the Common Voice Area and use, for example, audio processors such as chorus, vocoder, compressor etc to process all voices. Patches made in V2.1 are completely compatible with V3.0. They will appear in the Poly Voice Area when uploaded or opened. This is how you route signals from the Poly Voice Area to the Common Voice Area of the Patch. Use an Output module in the Poly Voice Area and click the CVA button(s) to route the audio signal to the Common Voice Area instead of to a physical output of the Modular. Click-drag the PolyAreaIn module to the Common Voice Area. Now, you can patch the output(s) of the PolyAreaIn module to other modules in the Common Voice Area. Finally, to route the signal(s) to the physical outputs of the Modular, use an Output module and click on the desired mixbus. Note! Convertion of files older than Ver 2.1 has not been implemented. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Increased number of modules in a patch: The "44 modules per patch" limit is removed and now the maximum number of modules in a patch is determined only by the available Sound Engine resources. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dynamic patch storage: The total number of patches that can be stored in the internal memory of the synthesizer depends on their size. This works much like files on a hard disk in a computer. The number of sounds that can be stored in Nord Modular depends on the complexity of the sounds. (This doesn't apply to the Micro Modular which stores 99 sounds just like in earlier versions). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Multi-step Undo/Redo: You are able to Undo and Redo in several steps. ---------------------------------------------------- Editable Knob Floater: You can change assigned patch parameters in real time from the knobs of the Knob Floater window. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Multi-synthesizer support: With the V3.0 Editor you can control up to four Nord Modulars/Micro Modulars from one Editor. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enhanced graphical interface: The graphical interface has been enhanced to make it even easier to create and edit your patches. More cable colors, highlighting of cables and cable chains, Morph group colors and a new toolbar with lots of new functions has also been included. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Integrated patch browser: Now, it's much easier to browse and select patches from Nord Modular's internal memory and from the computer using the browser window. The "Disk" tab shows the contents of your hard drive, double clicking on a patch name loads it into the editor and into the active slot. The "Synth" tab contains an overview of the synth memory, double clicking on a patch loads it into the editor and into the active slot. ---------------------------------------------------- New module buttons and functions: Several modules now have a button with the indications M or B. M means Mute and B means Bypass. On oscillators, the mute function has been moved from the waveform selector to a separate mute button. This means that some older sounds that had a morph group or a knob assigned to the waveform selector of an oscillator will behave differently than before. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Morph module moved to toolbar: To make morphing easier to use we removed the Morph module, and put the Morph functions in the toolbar instead. ========================================================== 3. Functions in V2.1 not implemented in V3.03 -------------------------------------------------- Midi controller 32 has been disabled in all patches, and is now used to change patch banks in Nord Modular (Old sounds that used this ctrl may behave differently). The Calculator has been removed. Help Files are missing. They will be posted on Clavia's home page as soon as they are ready. The Print functions: not implemented. Auto Assign MIDI Controllers: not implemented. Store and Restore Parameters: not implemented. Delete All Visible Cables: not implemented. MIDI Tester: not implemented. The Patch Templates function: not implemented. Mix Bus routing: not implemented. User definable shortcut keys: not implemented. ======================================== 4. Bug fixes between V3.01 and V3.03 --------------------- Midi controller was not accepted right after a program change. Fixed. Simultaneous program changes on several slots was not accepted. Fixed. The Micro Modular's display was not updated on external program change. Fixed A few Midi bugs fixed. Some interfaces that didn't work now works fine. Improved stability when editor runs in background. DSP load registration error fixed. Early Windows 95 compatibility error fixed. A few morph handling errors fixed. Small cable coloring bug fixed. "current notes" was not saved with the patch. Fixed. "Osc Slave FM" could not be morphed properly. Fixed. ======================================== 5. Known bugs in V3.0 --------------------- Hints views are missing for morph knobs in toolbar. MAC: Mouse is not hidden in horizontal and vertical knob modes. ================================================ 6. Troubleshooting --------------------- Editor and synthesizer communication problems PC The computer and Nord Modular exchange two-way MIDI Sysex messages, transferred at full MIDI rate. It has turned out that not all MIDI interfaces on the market today are able to handle this type of dense communication, even though the communication is 100% according to the MIDI standard. Generally, MIDI interfaces integrated on sound cards tend to be more unstable than external serial or parallel port interfaces. Often though, it's a combination of computer hardware, OS version, MIDI interface, drivers, other installed programs etc. that causes problems. First of all, Nord Modular and Micro Modular require a separate MIDI interface port for communication with the Editor. This MIDI port cannot (must not) be shared by other MIDI applications, such as sequencers etc. To try and make the communication work, we have listed some tips and suggestions: Replace your MIDI cables. This may sound simple, but quite often the problem is only a broken cable. Does the MIDI interface work fine with other MIDI equipment? If it does, it's probably not a hardware problem. Install or reinstall your MIDI interface with the latest drivers. Most manufacturers have drivers for download on their web sites. If you can't get the communication to work properly with your installed MIDI interface, even though you reinstalled it with the latest driver, it could be wise to try another MIDI interface. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Macintosh Most of the information above also applies to the Macintosh platform. USB MIDI interfaces have problems handling MIDI data if AppleTalk is activated. Therefore, make sure you have disabled AppleTalk if you use a USB MIDI interface. Running the Editor and other MIDI applications PC and Macintosh The Editor needs a separate MIDI port (1 MIDI In and MIDI Out pair) for each connected Nord Modular/Micro Modular to run properly. If you are using several Modulars and/or a sequencer software on the same computer as the Editor, you will need a multiport MIDI interface. You must configure the Editor and the sequencer to use separate ports of the multiport MIDI interface. Most of the sequencer software automatically opens every port of a multiport interface. In this case you have to deassign one or more of the ports in the sequencer software and dedicate them exclusively to the Editor. See the MIDI setup/configuration/devices part in the sequencer program manual. Macintosh If you want to run one or several MIDI applications at the same time with the Editor, make sure you have selected ‘MIDI in background’ in the OMS setup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- IN CASE OF FURTHER PROBLEMS, REFER TO THE CLAVIA HOMEPAGE www.clavia.se ============================================================================
